Perforated metal facades: light, shadow and bespoke patterns

One of the most interesting qualities of a perforated metal facade is that its surface acts as both material and graphic composition. The size, density and distribution of the perforations determine the facade’s transparency, light transmission and shadow effects, allowing the pattern to connect directly with the architectural concept. An understanding of the technology makes it possible to move beyond choosing existing patterns: a design idea can be developed into a manufacturable perforation system that takes the relevant technical and economic factors into account.
